Always Remember

9/11/2001 — has it really been 12 years?

A few years ago I wrote a brief memorial to one of the heroes. Please take a few minutes to read it, and remember the sacrifice.

IronButt Ride: RCB California Saddlesore 1000

I’m going on an IronButt ride on Saturday, June 8, with the River City Beemers (RCB), our local BMW motorcycle club.

This ride is a Saddlesore 1000, which means riding a minimum of 1,000 miles in less than 24 hours. For this ride we’re doing the entire route within the state of California.

2013 June 8 RCB Saddlesore 1000

Our starting point is the Sacramento 49er Travel Plaza, we have a planned departure time of 4:30 AM. I’ll be getting up at 3:15 AM in order to get a quick breakfast, put my riding gear on, and make the 35 minute ride to the start. I plan to get everything packed and ready early Friday evening so I can get a decent night of sleep before the early start.

This ride has an interesting route. The first and last legs are on Interstate 5, which is not interesting at all, but the first leg will be over by 7:30 AM, a few hours after sun up, and the last leg will be after sun down. So at least the boring part is mostly during darkness when there isn’t much to see anyway.

The route heads over to Highway 101 at Paso Robles, and goes north through San Francisco, over the Golden Gate bridge, all the way to Eureka on the coast. Most of 101 north of Santa Rosa is scenic, and a nice ride. From Eureka we go inland on Highway 299, which is one of the scenic, twisty roads which are so much fun on a motorcycle. At Redding, back on 5 for the final leg home.

Here is a table of the legs, with info about distance, expected temperature, and expected time of arrival.

Leg Destination City Leg Miles ETA Temperature
0 Sacramento (Start) 0 4:30 AM

65 F

1 Kettleman City 215 7:26 AM

80 F

2 Morgan Hill 190 10:36 AM

75 F

3 Hopland 169 2:13 PM

102 F

4 Eureka 181 5:28 PM

66 F

5 Redding 137 8:27 PM

102 F

6 Sacramento 160 10:49 PM

81 F

Some really nice, comfortable temperatures, but halfway between San Francisco and Eureka, and the final bit from west of Redding to Sacramento will be quite hot. The heat is manageable though, thanks to the quality gear I wear, and my experience riding in similar hot weather.

Total distance is 1053 miles, plus the ride to and from home.

I’ll be posting updates to Facebook and Twitter at each stop. And probably a few pictures too!

Questions welcome!
